I like watching films.
Call me old fashioned, but this LoveFilm type of rental service isn’t for me. You can’t beat heading to Blockbuster after work on a Friday, picking a DVD or two, then heading home via the off license for some Oranjeboom. Or at least you couldn’t, until recently.
The last time I went to Blockbuster, the choice they had was rubbish. They had a few new films, a few older films but that was pretty much it.
I realise they are up against it with these online rental companies and download services etc. but it seems they have just given up. Their shop near me (Telford Town Centre) always looks a mess, everything is for sale in the bargain bin, and their choice is getting worse and worse.
This sorry state of affairs was confirmed earlier this week when a letter from a debt collection agency landed on my door mat demanding 64 pounds immediately or I face instant death by firing squad. Turns out it was for some overdue DVD’s from Blockbuster which I neglected to take back for a few weeks. In the past they didn’t care as long as you paid a few quid off every time you went back, but it seems now they really are scraping the barrel for every penny.
I’d give it 12 months before Blockbuster as we know it is dead and buried. I know it’s awfully hypocritical of me but I reckon I can stall the debt collection agency for that long as I feel 64 quid for a couple of overdue DVD’s is a bit bloody excessive!!!
No late fees with LoveFilm

I thought it was fairly common knowledge they were on their arses desperatley scraping it across the rough carpet of solvency like a desperate worm-ridden mutt. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/mar/17/blockbuster-dvd-chain-chapter-11
I never really liked the place. A hundred, maybe a million copies of the latest pirate/wizard/superhero/rom-com visual morphene and about 0.00001 copies of anything you might actually pay to watch.
Back in the days of VHS I used to like Brooklands video, I went and picked up The Big Lebowski, a saucy French flick of middling quality but excellent hottie quotient and the complete Ivor The Engine. A great night’s entertainment in anyone’s book.
I remember renting early 90′s Wrestling pay-per-views on VHS from Raven Video in Perton when I was a kid. I’m sure it was only like 1.50 a night back then. Not best part of 4 squid a night for a newly released film now
